How to read Trump's approval rating
A presidential approval rating answers one question: “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Donald Trump is handling his job as president?” No single poll is the truth. Each has a margin of error of a few points, and pollsters make different choices about whom to survey and how. That is why this page tracks every published poll and combines them into an average.
Adults vs. voters. Polls of all adults include people who are not registered to vote. Polls of registered or likely voters narrow the sample to people more likely to cast a ballot, and in Trump's second term they have usually shown him a few points better. Use the population filter above to compare them directly.
Single polls vs. the trend. One poll moving five points is usually noise. A change in the average that holds for several weeks is more meaningful. The monthly chart shows the longer arc of Trump's second term, from +11.6 net approval in January 2025 to -27.5 today.
For context on the rest of the term, see the term end countdown, the executive orders tracker and our community polls, where readers can vote themselves (those results are not scientific and are not part of this average).
Methodology
- Data. Every national Trump job-approval poll listed by the VoteHub Polling API since January 20, 2025, refreshed hourly. Each poll links to its original release.
- Window. Each day uses polls whose fieldwork ended in the previous 28 days. If fewer than 2 polls are available, the window widens to 35, then 45 days. With fewer than 2 polls in 45 days, no average is shown for that day.
- Weights. Recency (a poll's weight halves every 10 days), sample size (square root, capped between 200 and 5,000 respondents) and frequency (a pollster with several polls in the window shares one pollster's worth of weight between them).
- Populations. When a pollster publishes the same survey for several populations, the “All polls” average counts it once, preferring adults, then registered voters, then likely voters. The population filters use only polls of that group.
- Partisan polls. Polls sponsored by a party or campaign are listed in the tables and marked, but they are not included in the average.
- House effects. For each poll we subtract the average's net approval on the day the poll closed; a pollster's house effect is the mean of those differences. Because each poll is also part of the average, house effects are slightly understated.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Trump's approval rating today?
In our polling average as of Oct 13, 2026, 35.5% of Americans approve of Donald Trump's job performance and 63.0% disapprove, a net approval of -27.5. The average combines 2 polls that closed in the previous 28 days.
How has Trump's approval rating changed since he took office?
Trump started his second term on January 20, 2025 with 50.4% approval and 38.8% disapproval (net +11.6). His net approval is now -27.5, a change of -39.0 points. The lowest point in our average so far was -36.4 on Oct 4, 2026.
Is there an official presidential approval rating?
No. There is no government-issued approval rating. Approval ratings come from independent pollsters such as Gallup, Pew Research Center, Ipsos, YouGov and Quinnipiac, each asking a sample of Americans whether they approve or disapprove of how the president is handling his job.
Why do Trump approval polls show different numbers?
Polls differ in who they survey (all adults, registered voters or likely voters), how they reach people (phone, online panels, text), how they weight their samples and when they were fielded. Polls of likely and registered voters have tended to be somewhat more favorable to Trump than polls of all adults. The house effects chart on this page shows how far each pollster typically sits from the average.
What does net approval mean?
Net approval is the share who approve minus the share who disapprove. A rating of 40% approve and 55% disapprove is a net approval of −15. Respondents who are unsure make up the rest.
How is this approval rating average calculated?
For each day we average every nonpartisan poll that closed in the previous 28 days, widening the window up to 45 days when fewer than 2 polls are available. Newer polls count more (weight halves every 10 days), larger samples count somewhat more, and pollsters that release many polls are down-weighted so no single firm dominates. The full method is described on this page.
How often is this page updated?
The page checks the VoteHub Polling API for new polls every hour and recalculates the average. The most recent poll currently in the data closed on Oct 6, 2026.
