Trump Meets Putin Envoy and Predicts Broad Ukraine-Europe Agreement

Donald Trump met Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House and predicted a broad agreement involving Ukraine and Europe, while disclosing no terms and not meeting the Ukrainian officials who were also visiting.
President Donald Trump met privately with Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev at the White House on Thursday, November 5, then predicted that negotiations over Russia’s war in Ukraine could produce a wider agreement covering European security. Trump disclosed no terms from his conversation and said he did not meet the Ukrainian officials who were at the White House that day.
The meeting was a new high-level contact between Trump and a representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin as U.S. officials prepared for trilateral talks with Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11. The Associated Press and Reuters both reported the meeting, Trump’s comments and the planned talks.
Trump describes a larger agreement but offers no details
Trump told reporters that an agreement would involve more than Ukraine and could encompass all of Europe. He said he believed the war was close to being settled, but neither he nor the White House announced a framework, timetable or commitments accepted by Russia or Ukraine.
That distinction matters because Trump’s statement was a prediction, not an announced peace accord. He has repeatedly said an end to the war was near, while negotiations have continued without a comprehensive settlement. Dmitriev’s visit showed that direct contacts were active, but the public record on Thursday did not establish that the parties had resolved disputes over territory, security guarantees or enforcement.
At the same time, Trump’s son-in-law and envoy Jared Kushner was in Brussels for discussions with Ukrainian, NATO and European officials. Kushner described those talks as productive and said they addressed security guarantees for Ukraine and a broader European security architecture. Those parallel meetings help explain Trump’s reference to an agreement extending beyond Ukraine, although the administration did not release a detailed proposal.
Trump did not meet the Ukrainian delegation
Ukrainian officials were also in the White House for an event hosted by first lady Melania Trump, but the president said he did not meet them. The AP reported that Trump did not explain why, and that the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Dmitriev attended the event with Ukrainian lawmaker Davyd Arakhamia and Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets. The gathering marked a six-day local ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine, that the first lady helped broker. The temporary truce ran from October 27 through November 1 and allowed humanitarian supplies and civilian evacuations.
Melania Trump urged both sides to build on that operation. According to the AP, she said nearly 800 people had been evacuated. Representatives from Russia and Ukraine thanked her and carried letters from her to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The humanitarian event was separate from President Trump’s private meeting with Dmitriev, even though the envoy’s presence created the opportunity for the contact.
What the meeting changes — and what it does not
The visit places Trump directly in the latest round of diplomacy before the Abu Dhabi talks. It also links the Ukraine negotiations to a broader discussion of European security, an issue that affects NATO members as well as the two combatants.
But Thursday’s developments did not amount to a ceasefire for the wider war or a signed political settlement. Russia and Ukraine have not publicly endorsed the broad agreement Trump described. The next verifiable test will be whether the scheduled trilateral talks produce specific, mutually acknowledged steps rather than another forecast that a deal is close.
For now, the confirmed development is limited but significant: Trump met Putin’s envoy at the White House, declined to reveal their discussion, said he expected a larger Ukraine-Europe agreement and acknowledged that he did not meet the Ukrainian delegation visiting the same building.
