Philippines confirms Trump will attend ASEAN summit in Manila

The Philippine government confirmed that President Donald Trump will travel to Manila for the November 16–18 ASEAN summit, his first visit to the country since 2017, while leaving his detailed itinerary undisclosed.

The Philippine government confirmed Wednesday, October 14, 2026, that President Donald Trump will travel to Manila for the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in November. The announcement turns earlier reports about a possible trip into an official commitment from the host government and adds another stop to Trump's planned Asia diplomacy.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said at a briefing that Trump's attendance was confirmed but declined to provide the visit's detailed arrangements. Reuters, GMA News and the Philippine Daily Inquirer separately reported the confirmation. The summit and related meetings are scheduled for November 16 through November 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay, part of metropolitan Manila.

Castro also did not say whether Trump's visit would be connected to the signing of the Pax Silica framework when a reporter asked about that possibility. No public itinerary released with the announcement identified his arrival or departure dates, a bilateral meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., other one-on-one sessions, or specific agreements expected to be signed. Those details therefore remain unconfirmed.

The trip would be Trump's first visit to the Philippines since November 2017, when he attended ASEAN-related meetings in Manila during his first presidential term and met then-President Rodrigo Duterte. The archival photograph accompanying this article comes from that 2017 visit; it does not depict the planned 2026 summit.

ASEAN brings together 11 Southeast Asian countries, while its related summits include outside partners with major economic and security interests in the region. Attendance by a U.S. president gives Washington an opportunity to meet regional leaders in one venue and address issues that cross national borders. The agenda and any Trump-specific meetings, however, had not been announced as part of Wednesday's confirmation.

Trump's expected appearance also comes as the Philippines and the United States maintain a treaty alliance and close security ties. Manila has been preparing for the summit by setting November 16–18 as special non-working days in metropolitan Manila to support security and traffic management. Philippine officials expect leaders from ASEAN members and partner countries to attend.

The confirmation is significant because earlier coverage had described the Manila stop as planned or expected rather than formally announced by the host government. It still falls short of a complete White House travel schedule. Presidential trips can change, and the Philippine statement did not disclose the operational details that would normally establish the full scope of the visit.

The next points to watch are confirmation from the White House, the release of Trump's itinerary and the list of bilateral or multilateral meetings. Until those records are published, the verified development is limited but clear: the Philippine government says Trump will attend the November ASEAN gathering in Manila.
