Calley Means resigns as top Trump health adviser amid MAHA tensions

Calley Means left his role advising Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as some MAHA activists pressed the Trump administration for faster action on food policy.
Calley Means, a senior adviser to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and a prominent advocate of the Make America Healthy Again movement, resigned from the Trump administration on Thursday, October 22, 2026. His exit removes one of the administration’s most visible champions of changing federal food policy.
Means did not give a reason for leaving. In a statement reported by The Associated Press and Reuters, he said he departed with “tremendous respect” for President Donald Trump and Kennedy and argued that the movement to confront chronic disease was only beginning. The White House thanked him for his service and said he had done “a fantastic job” for the MAHA movement.
A departure amid policy tensions
The resignation comes as some MAHA activists have publicly criticized the administration’s pace on food regulation, pesticide policy and other health priorities. Those complaints do not establish why Means resigned, and his own statement did not connect his departure to any particular dispute. The timing nevertheless puts attention on unresolved divisions inside the coalition that Kennedy brought into the administration.
Means had pushed the administration to focus on ultraprocessed foods, additives and pesticides as contributors to chronic illness. AP reported that he sometimes clashed with senior White House officials who were concerned about alienating the food industry. Other activists in the same movement wanted Kennedy to give greater priority to “medical freedom,” including changes to federal vaccine recommendations and approvals.
Those are distinct policy camps under the same MAHA label. Means became identified with the food-reform wing, while Kennedy’s department has also pursued contentious vaccine and public-health changes. His departure does not itself reverse an enacted rule, but it may reduce the influence of advocates pressing the White House for faster action on food.
Food-policy promises remain unfinished
A central unfinished item is a federal definition of ultraprocessed food. Kennedy had said the government would release a definition in April 2026, but officials did not complete one on that timetable. A later administration proposal called for closer scrutiny of food additives while making only limited reference to ultraprocessed foods, according to the AP account published by PBS NewsHour.
The administration has taken other steps under the MAHA banner, but activists quoted by AP said corporate pressure had slowed the food agenda. Kelly Ryerson of American Regeneration praised Means for working on food policy despite what she described as obstacles from corporate interests. Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America said he had advocated for healthier school food.
Means joined the White House early in Trump’s second term and worked from HHS. Before entering government, he and his sister, physician and wellness entrepreneur Casey Means, gained attention by arguing that the health system’s incentives and the food supply contributed to high rates of chronic disease. Casey Means was nominated for surgeon general but was not confirmed earlier in 2026.
What the resignation changes
In the immediate term, the White House has announced no replacement and HHS did not provide AP with a separate response. The resignation is therefore best understood as a personnel change with possible implications for the administration’s food-policy priorities, not proof that Trump or Kennedy has abandoned the broader MAHA agenda.
The next concrete tests will be whether the administration completes a usable definition of ultraprocessed food, advances its proposed review of additives and responds to supporters seeking action on glyphosate. Until then, claims that Means left because of one specific policy fight remain unconfirmed.
